Tips / Other

Summer is just around the corner and that means summer vacation and, for many students, jobs or internships. It’s important to use summer breaks wisely, as students can find a great opportunity to learn skills, giving them an edge over others.

While pursuing a lifeguard certification or waiting tables at restaurants are typical college student job options, the value of using time in that way is short lived. When graduation comes around, it’s important to demonstrate on your resume how summer work set you apart from other candidates. Use the summer months to benefit your career in the long run.

Follow these tips to make the most out of your summer internship.

Create a positive first and ongoing impression. The endgame here is to gain a professional reference, obtain a letter of recommendation or blurb on LinkedIn and have a quality resume entry. Earn these through punctuality and presenting a professional appearance each day.

Research the company. To stand out from other interns, research your company as much as you can. Read any trade newspapers that may be related to your industry of choice and troll the internet for any updates about the company.

Find mentors — co-workers, managers or colleagues. Look around and find people who share similar values and whom you admire. It’s never too late to build a personal board of advisors.

Find ways to go above and beyond. Be creative in what tasks you are given. If you finish a job early, ask for feedback or if your assistance is needed elsewhere.

Have a strong work ethic. Try to remain focused and invested in your work.

Learn new skills. An internship can open doors for your career. You’ll learn new ways of doing things and be given the opportunity to work on different projects. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.
