Tips / Other

As the school year winds down for high school and college seniors, many students look ahead to their next step. For many this means starting college, a second degree or a new job. However, some individuals opt to take time before entering the next phase of their life by taking a gap year. The key to taking a gap year is planning ahead of time. Follow our tips for taking a successful gap year.

A gap year doesn’t mean sitting on your couch, watching television and napping until your semester or new job starts. Make a plan for a transformative experience during your gap year. Consider participating in a specialized study or community service program like City Year, Global Citizen Year or AmeriCorps. Besides being a great life experience, these programs are helpful additions to any resume.

For high school students, apply for your desired college even if you plan to take a gap year. If accepted, you can defer enrollment, which secures your spot. Some colleges may require additional paperwork to support a gap year, so be sure to consult with each school. Travel is among the most popular gap year endeavors. Depending on the destination, consider participating in a short-term internship to explore a new career field.

The break is an ideal time to discover your passions beyond academic or professional interests. Be open to new experiences and truly savor each moment of your gap year.
