Let’s face it — people suffer injuries. Unfortunately, sometimes these injuries coincide with travel plans. Don’t let your injury derail your upcoming trip. Follow our tips for safely traveling while injured.
- First and foremost, consult with your doctor. If the act of travel itself will further disrupt or set back your recovery, he/she might advise you to refrain from traveling.
- Consider rescheduling your trip. If your trip would be best enjoyed while in better health and rescheduling isn’t a hassle, postpone it.
- Arrive to the airport, train station or other transportation center early. Regardless of the type of injury, you will need extra time to pass through security, purchase tickets or prepare to board.
- If possible, arrange for special assistance at the airport. A wheelchair can cut down on stress to your injury.
- Pack light. Keep all of your necessities in a small carry-on bag instead of lugging around a large, heavy suitcase.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for help, whether it’s placing your item in the overhead bin or picking up a dropped receipt.
- Consult with your hotel. See if the property has wheelchair access or if you could request a room close to the lobby or with easy access to the elevator.
- When in doubt, refer to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The website lists a detailed list of precautions to take, depending on your health status.
