Croatia has a long coastline and has become an increasingly popular beach destination in recent years.
From its border with Slovenia in the north to the border with Montenegro in the south, there are thousands of great spots to relax by the water. Many backpackers visit Hvar, but fewer take a taxi boat to the nearby Pakleni Islands. These unspoiled beaches are home to naturist spots for those who like to let it all hang out.
Zadar is another well-known area to visit, and Telascisca Bay is a top spot. This warm saltwater lake has a number of small coves around its edge, and it’s surrounded by forest.
Perhaps the most famous beach in Croatia is Zlatni Rat, Brac. A spit of golden pebbles extends into the Adriatic, and changes shape ever so slightly thanks to the tides. It’s great for sunbathing and windsurfing.
While many Croatian beaches are pebbled, Spiaza beach on the island of Susak is decidedly sandy. In fact, the whole island boasts sandy beaches, such as the tranquil Bok Bay, and the peaceful atmosphere is maintained thanks to a lack of roads, nightclubs or cars.
Another car-free island is Lopud, reached by a ferry from Dubrovnik. Hike over the center of the island to Sunj Bay Beach, where you can while away the day with trips to the solitary bar at the back of the shingle.
