There are plenty of film festivals around Europe that give you a chance to watch the best new films from around the world.
For those who are involved in the industry, festivals also provide a valuable opportunity to network. With that in mind, one of the biggest festivals is Europe is Cannes and the Marche de Film, which takes place in May. Access isn’t cheap, at around €400, but you will be able to meet the best in the business.
Alternatively, head to the Sheffield Doc Fest in June, which focuses on documentary films. Full access costs £250, with screenings, workshops and networking events.
In July, it’s time for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic. You can buy tickets to individual screenings, and take in some of the picturesque countryside that surrounds the town.
It might sound unlikely but Bosnia is also a hot destination for film lovers. The Sarajevo International Film Festival takes place in August, and welcomes the film industry to the largest Muslim community in Europe.
Over in Spain, you can get your film fix at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in September. With industry accreditation starting at just €70, it’s a great place for young filmmakers who are just starting out in the industry. If you just want to watch, tickets to individual screenings cost around €8.
