The classic road trip is about as American as apple pie and you can’t truly call yourself a traveler until you take at least one. Whether you’re following Route 66 or driving to a new job from Portland to Miami, you’re likely to hit a few truck stops along the way. Here are some tips for staying safe during your journey.
Lighting
Always avoid truck stops not well lit at night. Look for one with bright signs and preferably some sort of open restaurant attached, likely to have more people around.
Stay Near the Road
Never go far off the highway when visiting a truck stop. Criminals are more likely to wait in spots less easily accessible, where fewer people see them.
Lock Your Vehicle
This should go without saying, but always lock your vehicle when at a truck stop, regardless of whether or not someone is still inside. Thieves are less likely to attempt robbery when a car is difficult to enter than when it’s not.
Don’t Sleep There
Your budget might be tight, but sleeping at a truck stop is never a safe option. Not only is it illegal for cars to park overnight at truck stops in many states, but you can’t see a threat coming with your eyes closed.
Watch Your Surroundings
Getting hit by a car is bad enough, but getting hit by an 18-wheeler is pretty much guaranteed to mess you up. Pay close attention to your surroundings and do not step in the path of a truck. It’s more difficult for them to spot you than someone in a regular-sized car.
