China unveiled its newest and fastest trains in June. The new bullet train, known as Fuxing (which means “revival” or “rejuvenation” in Chinese), went online between Shanghai and Beijing. It can travel up to 400 kph, although will mostly average speeds of around 350 kph.
The new cars boast additional legroom, comfortable seats, power outlets and WiFi. The Fuxing trains are the first entirely Chinese manufactured trains on the planet.
The debut service in June saw a pair of trains run from Shanghai Hongqiao to Beijing South, making the 1,318-kilometer trip in just five hours and 45 minutes. At top speed, the train can cut that travel time down to three and a half hours.
The trains offer a surprisingly quiet and relaxing trip, especially compared to traditional trains. That’s because these new CR400AF model trains are electric multiple units (EMUs), which use electricity as a propellant, rather than a locomotive engine. They’re greener, too, using 17 percent less energy than other bullet train models in use in China.
