Exploring central Italy means spending time looking around picture-perfect hill towns, sampling local delicacies and enjoying la dolce vita.
If you’re flying into Rome, spend a few days seeing the big sights such as the Coliseum, the Vatican and the Trevi Fountain. Take in a football match at Roma or Lazio if you want to experience the Italian passion for sport, and then head off to the city of Perugia.
High in the Umbrian hills, this charming place is great for a couple of days. Wander around the old town, eat delicious local delicacies at delis such as Daje and Il Perugino, and visit the ancient Etruscan well.
From here, make your way to Siena. If you’re lucky, you’ll visit at the time of “il palio,” a famous horse race through the narrow streets that takes place each year July 2 and Aug. 16. Even if you can’t make it in the summer, Siena is a magical place to eat, drink and soak up the atmosphere.
It wouldn’t be a trip to Italy without seeing Florence, so get to this historic town and take a look at the iconic cathedral. Make the hop over to Pisa to see the famous leaning tower, and then drive back down the coast to Rome.
