Tips / Destination

If you can get away for two weeks and want to make the most of your time, think about making a trip to southern Mexico.

Many visitors to Mexico fly to Mexico City or other tourist areas such as Cancun, while relatively few get to know the southern states Oaxaca, Chiapas, Veracruz and Puebla. Start your trip in Oaxaca, famous for indigenous culture and mescal, a spirit made from the agave plant.

Head down the Pacific Coast to blast away the hangover at the surf beach at Puerto Escondido, before making the trip to San Cristobal de las Casas in Chiapas. This colonial city is an amazing place to buy local handicrafts and take in some live music.

From here, spend a few days in Veracruz, where Mexicans love to go on holiday. Visit the ceremonial Aztec city of Xalapa or head to Veracruz City itself, where seafood is on the menu and friendly locals love to party.

For a taste of big city life, head to Puebla. This wealthy city has come to be known as the gastronomic capital of Mexico, so it’s worth putting aside some money for a nice meal.

With so much to see in Mexico, it can be difficult knowing where to start. However, with this two-week trip you will take in beaches, mountains, indigenous culture and bustling modern cities.

It’s time to look beyond the obvious Mexican destinations and discover some more of the country. Southern Mexico is a great place to do so.
