Tips / Destination

The United States is home to some of the world’s most popular tourist attractions that visitors travel far and wide to spy. But not all of these national treasures are worth the hours spent waiting in line and the grumpy moods that come with fatigue, impatience and eventual disappointment. See below to learn which tourist traps are worth skipping.

Empire State Building

As the site of a handful of lovable movies and the uncontested symbol of New York, the iconic tower seems like a must-do, but with long lines and fighting crowds to get a view at the top, the experience can take hours. Instead, head a few blocks north to Rockefeller Center for views from the top of this building, including a high-rise view of the Empire State Building.

Hollywood Walk of Fame

Movie lovers stroll this street in downtown Los Angeles to snap a photo of their favorite actors, but the street does not feature much else in the way of sites. Stretch your legs in other parts of town where you may actually stumble upon stars!

Mount Rushmore

Nestled in the Black Hills of South Dakota, this mountain monument of four former presidents is conveyed as massive and majestic. While it may be the latter, it certainly does not seem like the former in person, as the viewing terrace feels miles away. You’re better off looking at photos on the Internet for a close-up.

Statue of Liberty

This monumental structure rises high above the harbor surrounding New York, but once on Liberty Island, there isn’t really anywhere to go. Visitors can climb to the base, but catching views from anywhere higher is no longer possible. Opt for a short boat cruise around Lady Liberty and snap photos from afar instead.
