Abu Dhabi and Dubai may soon have a futuristic sight: flying police motorcycles. The governments are currently working on incorporating the technology into the existing fleet of police vehicles. The bikes meld the technology of a motorcycle and a drone, and were developed by Hoversurf.
The bikes were unveiled at Gitex 2017 at the Dubai World Trade Center. The device can seat one officer or can be controlled remotely. It’s being considered for use in emergency responses, as it can carry a responding officer over traffic or address a situation happening above ground level.
The Hoversurf has four large propellers, allowing it to fly at a height of five meters for 25 minutes per battery charge. It’s currently in early testing stages and its operating time is expected to increase as the technology develops. The bikes can hold up to 300 kilograms at speeds of up to 70 kph. Sans pilot, it can cover up to 6 kilometers.
UAE continues its work to position itself as a global leader in tech innovation and in personal flying vehicles specifically. In October, UAE showed off autonomous flying taxis in Dubai, which completed the first test flights and could take more than 25 percent of all transport trips by 2030.
