The freedom, impulsivity and independence that come with traveling solo are sometimes overshadowed by the danger associated when roaming the world alone. Despite all the benefits and surprises that await the solo traveler, lone explorers should keep alert for the following solo travel scams.

Keeping valuables close and in secure pockets does not apply only to solo travelers but when alone it is harder to keep an eye out for pickpockets, especially if you are browsing your map or busy translating foreign-language signs. The attention and awareness of a solo traveler’s surroundings must be heightened at all times, and it helps to keep your bags in your line of sight (i.e., hanging in front of you instead of behind you).

To avoid being scammed by a taxi driver who takes advantage of visitors’ lack of location awareness, download an offline-accessible map and keep track of the route your cabbie is taking. If this is not possible, negotiate a fare before entering the vehicle or tuk tuk so you’re not left with a hefty and unreasonable fee after an unfair ride.

Common sense is more important than ever as a solo traveler. Unmarked ATMs, ticket booths and souvenir shops should be avoided. Even if you have to shell out a few extra bucks for a surcharge, it beats losing all your money to an ATM scam.
