Tips / Safety

Solo travel is not for everyone — it requires various elements of independence, self-reliance and, most importantly, patience. Although there are many benefits to traveling solo, it is a courageous feat, one that involves a lot of self-awareness. If you choose to venture out on a solo holiday, avoid the following mishaps that can potentially lead any traveler astray.

Don’t … arrive after dark. Arriving at a new place in the dark makes it more difficult to navigate your surroundings and makes you more of a target for theft or other dangers.

Don’t … be too friendly. Making friends on the road is an enjoyable part of the experience, but opening yourself up to any and every stranger can also open you up to problems. Keep your social circle to your hostel or hotel.

Don’t … forget to check in with friends or family. Going off the grid is a major advantage of travel, but periodic check-ins with loved ones back home are important when traveling alone. Consider sending your itinerary by e-mail.

Don’t … drink too much alcohol. Imbibing in a few drinks is a customary travel component, but going overboard can set you up for disaster. Drink water every other drink and call it a night while you still have your wits about you.

Going the Distance: Which Airports Have the Longest Walks?

Interior Upgrades Begin Rolling Out Across United Fleet

United Airlines is in the midst of a major initiative to modernize its fleet over the next several years. After first announcing the plan in 2021, planes fitted with United’s signature interior are finally beginning to appear across the airline’s narrowbody fleet of Boeing and Airbus planes. United flyers are sure to notice these enhancements from the moment they step on board: Each new or updated plane sports remodeled seats, seatback entertainment screens for everyone, Bluetooth connectivity and more, all adding up to a better experience on every journey.
