Africa is predominately known to tourists as a safari destination thanks to a wealth of animals that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. The thousands of elephants, lions, zebras and wildebeests make it a marvelous region, but not every African country is great for seeing these beasts.
Morocco is often a starting point for African tourism seeing as it’s just a short boat trip from Europe, but you won’t find much in the way of wildlife in this sandy region. While there are some fantastic desert tours available, safaris aren’t the reason to visit.
Like Morocco, Libya is more a desert landscape than prairie. In fact, roughly 90 percent of the country is covered by sand. You won’t find many lions wandering the dunes here so it’s best to steer clear if your goal is to see wildlife.
Mali is considered the crown jewel of Western Africa and is a wonderful place to visit to discover the various local tribes residing in the region. However, while there are hordes of elephants living in the country, they’re often elusive and seeing them is not guaranteed. Accommodations are often few as well.
While Egypt is definitely a must-visit country in Africa, thanks to a wealth of historic architecture like the pyramids and breathtaking landscape along the Nile, it’s somewhat lacking when it comes to wild animals. Since most of the country is engulfed in sand, many of the continent’s most magnificent beasts are unable to live in the region, which is why it should stay off your safari list.
