Amid the flurry and frenzy of a modern-day airport, some travelers find solace in the creature comforts that lie within the portal walls. Fast food stands, social-central bars and copious shopping opportunities provide a sense of serenity and escape from the throngs of travelers scurrying to flights and the endless lines at security checkpoints. Another increasing feature has seen a rise in airports, and serves as an alternative conduit of healing and peace: airport gardens. When visiting the following airports, seek out these natural spaces for a touch of nature among industrial chaos.
Changi International Airport, Singapore
As far as the prevalence of green space is concerned, Singapore’s central airport takes the cake. The world-famous butterfly garden is home to a waterfall, and other gardens are named for the plants they grow, such as the sunflower garden, cactus garden and orchid garden.
Incheon Airport, Seoul
Outside the terminal is the sprawling Sky Garden with biking and hiking paths. Once inside the airport, 12 other gardens feature diverse flora and fauna, as well as water gardens.
Schiphol Airport, Amsterdam
At Schiphol’s Airport Park, 20,000 square feet house outdoor elements of nature within the airport walls. Trees, logs and even audio of birds chirping transport travelers to a serene scene where stationary bicycles can be used to power phones and other electronics.
Chicago O’Hare International Airport
Farm-to-table dining is this airport’s claim to fame as the Aeroponic Urban Garden grows herbs and vegetables used by airport restaurants. The uniquely structured vertical garden is an attraction in itself.
Honolulu Airport, Hawai’i
This outdoor garden meets at the crossroads of Chinese, Japanese and Hawai’ian cultures, with three small rivers that traverse the green pathways beneath willow trees. A traditional Japanese pagoda, arched bridges and a lily pad pond capture aspects of each culture.
