For the uninitiated, snowshoeing can seem an intimidating sport to break into. But once you know the basics, there are plenty of places to hit an easy trail and take in the winter wonderland. Washington State has several rewarding trails for beginners.
Olympic National Park’s Hurricane Ridge
At Olympic National Park’s Hurricane Ridge, you’ll start out at a high point that looks out among serrated peaks. Guided snowshoe trips are available here.
Mount Rainier National Park
From the Paradise parking lot high on Mount Rainier, you’ll be rewarded with views of the glaciated volcano and surrounding peaks. Again, park rangers offer guided trips, or you can strike out on your own.
Snow Lake Trail
Near Snoqualmie Pass, head to the Snow Lake trail, a popular spot in summer and winter. You’ll gain some elevation, but your snowshoes will serve you well in deep powder as you approach the stunning lake basin.
Gold Creek Pond
Nearby, head to the flat and wide Gold Creek Pond area, where mountains form a ring around a picturesque pond. The trail makes a loop around it.
Mount Spokane
In eastern Washington, Mount Spokane’s ski area offers trails up the mountain.
