Top 5 / North America

The Civil War was a defining point in not just U.S. history, but the history of the entire world. Perhaps that’s why people from all over the globe travel to the country to visit many of the historical war sites. Here are five of the best any history buff cannot miss.

Gettysburg National Military Park, Gettysburg, Pa.

Gettysburg has the honor of not just being a pivotal turning point in the Civil War, but also the spot where Abraham Lincoln gave his famous address to the nation. Guides claim the ghosts of fallen soldiers haunt the region, giving it a little added paranormal appeal.

Fort Sumter National Monument, Charleston, S.C.

Fort Sumter marked the first official battle of the Civil War on April 12, 1861. Visitors to the monument can walk along the fort wall, explore the museum and discover remains of the artillery used during the fight. The nearby Charleston Naval Shipyard is an added bonus.

Antietam National Battlefield, Sharpsburg, Md.

The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest one-day in U.S. history. A walk along Bloody Lane will immerse you in the fight where 23,000 soldiers perished in battle. The battlefield also includes famous landmarks like Burnside’s Bridge, Dunker Church and the Cornfield.

Shiloh National Military Park, Shiloh, Tenn.

Shiloh was the site of the largest battle during the Civil War’s Mississippi Valley Campaign with 109,784 participating in the battle. The park showcases living history demonstrations throughout the year and is also home to the neighboring Corinth battlefield and Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center.

Manassas National Battlefield Park, Manassas, Va.

Manassas is well known as the spot where Stonewall Jackson earned his nickname. It was the host of two Civil War battles, well preserved by caring staff. Onsite you’ll also find the Henry Hill Visitor Center, a museum and a statue to Confederate General Thomas J. Jackson. The park offers both walking and driving tours.
