There is a great deal of diving to be done in the Yucatan for both beginners and more experienced divers. Here are five of the top spots to look out for.
Gran Cenote
Located near the town of Tulum, this dive allows you to explore the subterranean cave system of a cenote, the local name for a sunken limestone pool. It’s a dive with something different and one even beginners can enjoy.
Pared Verde
Head to Playa del Carmen to dive Pared Verde (Green Wall), home to a multitude of sea life. Explore the 10-foot ledge that runs across an otherwise unbroken sandy seafloor.
Mox-Che
This reef dive is found at Cozumel and is a great one for beginners who want to enjoy some coral mounds. There are also archways teeming with snapper and grunts that make for a great visual spectacle.
Banco Chinchorro
This area regularly makes it onto the list of the most desirable dive locations in the world. The coral atoll is near the Mexico-Belize border and you’ll need a special permit to dive given it is protected by the federal government.
Underwater Museum
Found in the waters off Cancun, the Underwater Museum draws divers from around the world. There are a huge number of marine species found here, all of which are reproduced in life-sized works of art. The idea is to attract divers to the area and give other areas a rest from intensive use, but the museum is an oddity worth a visit in its own right.
