Top 5 / Africa

Malawi boasts a rich culture full of vibrant festivals and friendly faces that makes it one of the most enjoyable countries to visit in the world. If you can only make it a handful of times, here are some of the festivals you don’t want to miss.

Lake of Stars

The combination of U.K. and Malawi artists putting on spectacular seaside shows makes it a must-see event in the country. For nearly 15 years it’s been one of the largest music festivals in Africa and draws crowds from around the world.

Dug-Out Canoe Festival

Sports lovers will be entertained by the annual Dug-Out Canoe competition on Lake Malawi. Each year competitors hollow out the inside of a tree and turn it into a canoe, which they must then race against other competitors across the waters. Tourists are encouraged to come watch and join in the fun.

Luwawa International Mountain Bike Marathon

More of a competition than a festival, the Luwawa International Mountain Bike Marathon brings together the best mountain cyclists around Africa to compete across some pretty rough landscape. Of course, there’s plenty of revelry to go around with food and music for everyone.

Republic Day

Republic Day is Malawi’s Independence Day, a beloved annual event in which the citizens celebrate their independence from Britain. It’s essentially one giant party in the capital with parades, music and more.

Interregional Music Crossroads

The Interregional Music Crossroads is actually a competition to find the best African band on the continent, with the winner able to headline their own tour of Europe. Of course, it’s the perfect opportunity to hear some of the best music all of Africa has to offer.
