Hawker markets are essentially food courts offering delicious, local food at reasonable prices. These down-to-earth culinary destinations offer hundreds of food courts throughout Singapore, but these five take the cake.
The largest hawker center in Singapore with more than 260 food stalls, Chinatown Complex Food Centre offers a wide range of dishes from seafood to chicken, satay and rice bowls. Prices at Chinatown Complex are reasonable, with the average meal $2.50–3.
One of the oldest and largest food courts in the island city is Old Airport Road Food Centre, offering tasty, authentic Singapore cuisine. The food court is home to some of the best soya beancurd — a delicious soy pudding — in Singapore, such as Lao Ban Soya Beancurd and 51 Soya Beancurd. The long lines at Old Airport Road are worth the wait for this tasty delicacy. A heaping bowl is usually $1.50–2.
Maxwell Road Hawker Centre is home to several famous food stalls, including Tian Tian Hainese Chicken Rice stall, Zhen Zhen Porridge, China Street Fritters and Marina South Delicious Food. This market is ideally located in Chinatown, opposite the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum.
Tiong Bahru Market Hawker Centre
Tiong Bahru Hawker Centre is a clean, spacious food court, recently renovated to offer an airy, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. The food court itself is located on the second floor and on the first floor is the famous Tiong Bahru Wet Market, offering fresh local produce. Check out the Jian Bo Chwee Kueh stall in the market for some of the best chwee kueh — a traditional steamed rice cake served with a radish relish.
Unlike other food centers that close earlier in the evening, Chomp Chomp Food Centre is open from 6 p.m. until late in the evening every day, ideal for a late-night, post-drinks bite. Chomp Chomp serves some of the best satay in Singapore, from pork and beef to chicken and mutton.
