Can’t get enough fantastical plot lines or mythical beasts? Travel to one of these five literary destinations for fantasy fans.
Stop by King’s Cross Station for a visit to Platform 9 3/4, where you might try to catch the train to Hogwarts. Or, head to J.M. Barrie’s seven-bedroom mansion to see where he penned his beloved Peter Pan.
The whole town is a boon for Anne Rice fans. The original vampire novelist really embraces the city throughout her work and, in addition to the destination having the same vibe you’ll find between the pages, you can also take an Anne Rice-themed tour.
For Outlander fans (book or show), there are many spots to see in Scotland, but one of the most historically factual, while still a major plot point in the series, is Culloden Battlefield. The visitor’s center features a wide array of artifacts and then you can explore the battlefield on your own or enjoy a living history presentation.
This mansion near Lake Geneva played host to several important guests in the early 1800s — Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and Percy Shelley. Out of their stay came two important fantastical works of literature, Frankenstein and The Vampyre.
There must be something in the air at Oxford. Masters J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Lewis Carroll and Phillip Pullman all lived here, and you can take your pick of the many tours inspired by their work.
