Top 5 / North America

Our thoughts go out to the people of Mexico affected by the 7.1-magnitude earthquake that hit Mexico City last month. We love this vibrant city, and hope to see tourism return in full force to restore it to normalcy. If you’re planning a trip to the City of Palaces, here are some of the best museums to check out. They are open and running and ready for business.

Museo Nacional de Antropolgia

Located in the heart of the Bosque de Chapultepec, the National Museum of Anthropology is the city’s largest museum — covering an area of 20 acres with 23 exhibition rooms and multiple gardens. The museum brings in 3 million visitors yearly.

The exhibits cover the Toltecs, Zapotecs, Maya and Aztecs history and include more than 7 million archaeological pieces.

Museo Frida Kahlo

If you are a fan of the artwork of Frida Kahlo, the house she was born, lived and died in is a must-see. Gain a deeper understanding of the famous artist by exploring her personal belongings, her relationship with Diego Rivera and getting a glimpse into her inspirations.

MUAC

The MUAC, or Museo Universitario Arte Contemporaneo, is a large, spectacular museum located on the university’s campus. Its modern architecture stands out from the traditional surroundings of Mexico City. If you want to get a taste for contemporary art in the midst of traditional and historic museums, head here for a day.

The Palacio de Bellas Artes

Located in the historic center of Mexico City, the Palace of Fine Arts — also known as the Cathedral of Art — is a beautiful, palatial building housing murals by Diego Rivera and other prominent artists. It is an artistic center for opera, dance, theater and other forms of performance as well.

Museo Soumaya

Even if it’s just to see the unique and striking architecture of this building, the Museo Soumaya is a must-visit. The museum is free to enter and is one of the most visited museums in Mexico. Its art ranges from Mesoamerica to modern day and its 66,000 pieces will give you a little taste of everything.
