Top 5 / Other

Vacations are nice, but in recent years it has become harder to unplug from society and actually spend time relaxing — without technology. Disconnecting from the chaos can be the key to the stress of day-to-day life; however, it seems those destinations are few and far between. These surreal destinations offer the chance for a digital detox and allow relaxation to set in.

River Kwai Jungle Rafts

This eco-friendly hotel operates without the use of electricity — try using technology now. It is tucked away inside the green mountain on River Kwai in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. The entire hotel is made of bamboo huts connected together, floating peacefully on the water. The hotel is next to a local village, where you can spend part of your day exploring. Sit yourself on a hammock, bring a good book and melt away into your surroundings.

Ultima Thule Lodge, Chitina, Alaska

The Ultima Thule Lodge, located in the Alaskan Wrangell Mountains is as far off the grid as you can get, without needing a passport. Adjacent to the Wrangell St. Elias National Park, you are 100 miles from the nearest road — completely out of cell phone range. Instead of spending your time watching TV or on the internet, discover glaciers, admire the Northern Lights and trek into the wilderness terrain.

Little Palm Island, Florida Keys

Spend your days in a hammock, strolling the white-sand beach and forgetting the fact there are no TVs, phones or technology to disrupt the tranquil environment. Think of this as the real-life Gilligan’s Island, where the only traffic is crossing iguanas. One of the few telephones on the island is stowed away in an outhouse. The bungalows have no alarms clocks or TVs, but present Champagne to its guests. Despite the lack of technology on the island, you will still love the luxurious digs.

Remota Hotel, Puerto Natales, Chile

Embrace the Chilean culture when staying at the Remota Hotel in the vast Chilean Patagonia region. The lack of TVs and electronic connection allows guests to turn to nature and appreciate the beautiful landscape, glaciers and unobstructed views of the sky.

Chumbe Island Coral Park, Zanzibar, Tanzania

Talk about being off the grid when staying on this private nature reserve in one of the seven bungalows on the island. Located six miles from Zanzibar, Chumbe Island Coral Park is a natural park and sanctuary filled with hundreds of species of tropical fish swimming along coral. There is no electricity in these bungalows. They are designed to stay cool with the Indian Ocean breezes, collect rainwater and store solar energy to heat showers and power reading lamps.
