Cuba boasts a long and varied coastline with some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. But where should you go if you want to get below the surface and scuba dive?
Isla de la Juventud
Well-known for its turtle population, this island sits 50 kilometers from mainland Cuba on the south coast. Its isolated location means few visitors come here, but those who make the journey will be treated to a view of Cuba untouched by tourism.
Jardines de la Reina
This archipelago stretches for 150 kilometers along the south coast of Cuba, and its status as a marine reserve means only a few hundred divers are allowed to visit per year.
Holguin
This area of Cuba provides access to the second-longest reef in the world, but you wouldn’t know it held such a title for the relative lack of visitors. Situated in the east of the island, the city of Holguin is a fair stretch from the capital, Havana, but worth the journey.
USS Merrimac
For something slightly different, dive to the wreck of the USS Merrimac near Santiago de Cuba. This dive is undertaken in strong currents and is recommended for advanced practitioners. If you are up for a challenge, diving the wreck is a magical experience.
Bay of Pigs
Most famous for the botched U.S.-backed invasion in 1961, the Bay of Pigs has now become popular with divers. Aside from coral gardens and sponges, you can also dive to the wreck of the Jaruco, deliberately sunk in 1994. Gentle conditions make the Bay of Pigs a good choice for beginners.
