Mozambique is a surfer’s paradise thanks to plentiful beaches and some truly epic waves all throughout the year. With no shortage of shoreline, it’s difficult to pinpoint the best places to catch some surf, but here are five of the best.
The reef crest between northern Inhaca Island and Ilha Portuguesa contains some of the most consistent swells and warm waters all year. When the waves are working in your favor that’ll give you time to discover the 150 types of coral reefs hiding offshore.
There are four distinct surf breaks outside of the village of Tofo with Tofinho Point the most prominent. It has the most consistent right break in Mozambique and some of the strongest waves in Africa. This place is not for beginners.
The world-class surf off of Ponta d’Ouro attracts surfers from all continents. Heavy rips move through the area during low tide, but the rest of the day offers prime surfing for anyone willing to give it a shot.
Barra Beach contains steady breaks between 300 and 500 meters throughout the year and has waves suitable for every experience level, including kids. It gets a little hairy here during hurricane season but for the most part it’s one of the more pristine regions of Mozambique.
Guinjata Bay lies roughly 20 kilometers south of Inhambane near Praia de Jangamo and offers some pretty gnarly right breaks consistently all year. The reef-coral beach also offers spectacular views and the waves are welcoming to kids as well as adults.
