The French Island of Guadeloupe offers some of the most striking natural beauty in the Caribbean’s Lesser Antilles with white-sand beaches, volcanic reliefs, rolling hills, towering mountains and lush jungles. While the island offers numerous experiences and destinations, we gathered the top five things to do and see.
Take a Blue Lagoon Excursion
Before being named Guadeloupe, the island was called Karukera meaning “The Island of Beautiful Waters.” Explore the island’s crystal-clear waters and other natural wonders with a Blue Lagoon Excursion in Sainte Rose. Snorkel amidst broken wreckage, learn about fascinating local history from knowledgeable guides, tour a mangrove forest and discover unique wildlife.
Jardin Botanique de Deshaies
Located on the island of Basse Terre, one of two islands that comprise Guadeloupe, Jardin Botanique de Deshaies offers an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. Stroll through the tranquil gardens and enjoy the incredible variety of tropical plants, flowers and grand trees, feed parrots and enjoy amazing panoramic views from the specialty restaurant that overlooks the Caribbean sea in the garden’s waterfall park.
Hiking the Soufriere Volcano
A trip to Guadeloupe is not complete without hiking the Soufriere Volcano. Park at the foot of the volcano near the Bains Jauns, and enjoy a modern three- to four-hour hike. The views at the top are well worth the climb. Upon reaching the top, you’ll find the volcano’s crater, featuring steaming geysers and geothermal baths. The flora on the volcano is different from the rest of the island, adding to the uniqueness of the experience.
St. Anne Beach
St. Anne is one of the most beautiful beaches in Guadeloupe, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Take a dip in the crystal-clear water with hardly any waves or lounge on the white sand under the palm trees. Grab a bite and a drink at the beach bar and restaurant, or visit the surrounding local markets.
Canopee Guadeloupe Canyoning
For those looking for a bit more adventure, take a canyoning or rappelling tour in the jungles of Basse Terre. Explore the island’s vast canyons, repel down turquoise waterfalls, hike through the rainforest and slide down natural waterslides all while admiring the natural beauty and wildlife the island is known for.
