Cross-country skiing can be an excellent way to enjoy the winter without a deep knowledge of tricky topics like avalanche awareness, route finding and winter camping. Cross-country skiing is also excellent exercise and can help newbies enjoy snowy scenery.
Here are five tips for getting started.
Gear Rental
Make sure you rent gear from a reputable source. Outfitters have great knowledge and can help you make sure your skis, boots and poles are all properly fitted to your height.
Groomed Trails
Find groomed trails. Yes, you can cross-country ski up a mountain through deep powder, but beginners will have better luck on flat paths groomed with tracks for cross-country skiers.
Start Classically
Start with classic cross-country skiing. There’s also skate skiing, but it’s harder for beginners to pick up. Classic cross-country skiing has an easier technique most people pick up quickly.
Set Up for Success
Put your skis on while facing across a slope. If you try to start while facing uphill or downhill, your skis will move in that direction and you may fall.
Start Slowly
Start slowly and build up your confidence. Overconfidence can lead to falls and injuries, so take it easy at first and get the hang of your stride and pacing.
