These visits can be fraught with expectations, anxiety and a lot of obligations. And that is if you like your family and get along with them. There are some things to do that might ease your misapprehension.

Accommodations
Don’t stay with them. You are a grown-up and there is Airbnb now. If you can afford to stay close by, spend the whole day with your family, but your evenings and early mornings can be for you. A little alone time goes a long way.

Alone Time
To this end, if you can’t stay somewhere else, be sure to take time in the morning to give yourself the space you need.

Plan events. Sitting around and talking politics can be draining. Go to a museum, the movies or an art gallery. Create experiences to bond through.

Acceptance
Accept your family as they are and your relationship to them. If you can just take a deep breath and be okay with things as they are, this takes a lot of pressure off wanting to change things that can’t be changed.
