While traveling to a distant galaxy may still be the fuel of science fiction, you can adopt and name your own star. Organizations, such as International Star Registry, Adopt a Star or Staracle, allow you to choose your own star from a galaxy of possibilities.
The International Star Registry has been operating since 1979. This company’s stars range from $54 to $154 and include beautifully detailed maps, a small astronomy guide and a personalized certificate.
Adopt a Star takes a slightly different approach to star adoption. This non-profit organization “sells” stars to help fund the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo. Since 2008, Adopt a Star has helped raise money for the Kepler Asteroseismic Science Consortium. This international team of scientists is not allowed to receive funding from NASA despite the key role they play in the Kepler mission. Stars start at $10 and planetary systems cost $100. Unlike other star naming sites, the entire adoption fee is put towards scientific research.
Finally, the website Staracle allows users to name a star for free and includes a printable certificate and astrological map. While this site does not have the recognition or prestige that costly sites do, Staracle is a good option for a small budget.
Naming a star will help you experience the night sky and the stars in a whole new way.
