Since Uber and Lyft, the increasingly popular taxi alternatives, began operating a few years ago, drivers likely made airport drop-offs and pick-ups. But they did so at their own risk, knowing it was actually illegal for any companies other than those contracted with the airports to provide these types of services.

But now, airports across the United States are starting to allow Uber and Lyft to operate. Many have designated a special area for Uber and Lyft pick-ups; the drop-off scenario is the same as any other transportation method.

Uber and Lyft sometimes add airport charges to these rides, so that’s something to note when you’re estimating costs. According to Taxi Fare Finder, Uber and Lyft currently operate at more than 35 airports nationwide, including major airports like Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Denver International Airport and LaGuardia Airport.

Airports like Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport are recent additions to the list. And Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta approved the two companies’ operations, though they’re not scheduled to start until July 1. With the trend favoring Uber and Lyft, it seems inevitable taxis will soon have to contend with these companies at every large airport in the country.
