Trends / History

Each year before the fall season gets into full swing and everything is laced with the flavor of pumpkin spice, Amtrak kicks off the seasonal spirit by rolling out their vintage train car — the Great Dome Car — on select routes.

The two-story Great Dome Car dates to the 1950s and features larger windows on each side and on parts of the roof in order to give passengers better views of the surroundings, including the onset of fall foliage. The car is especially advantageous for travelers into the fall when the colors of the leaves begin to change and train travelers can marvel in nature from their train seat.

Amtrak passengers can grab a first-come, first-serve seat in the Great Dome Car for no additional charge, outside the cost of their standard train ticket, but they are encouraged to spend limited time in the car so other passengers may experience the views as well.

The Great Dome Car makes its appearance at the end of each summer through the end of September, and is available as part of the Downeaster route, which travels between Brunswick, Maine, and Boston, Mass. The car also has been featured on the Great Adirondack route, traveling from Albany, N.Y., to Montreal, Canada.
