Is it true the bees are disappearing? It is and so much so the European Union is planning to ban certain kinds of insecticides in order to try and slow the disappearing populations of honeybees. Without bees, the world’s flowers, crops and honey will suffer severely over time. In order to reinforce populations, or just because the plight of bees is in the air, some people are taking up bee keeping as a hobby.

If communing with bees is something you are genuinely interested in, you might want to check out Bee Built, which introduces you to some of the realities of bee keeping and whether or not an apiary is something you are prepared to pursue in earnest. You need to consider a lot of factors when beginning this hobby, such as hive maintenance and how the seasons unfold where you live. Preparing your hive in winter is essential since bees are generally looking to put down roots in the spring.

There are also beekeeping classes offered in many cities. Check your local listings for a class near you. If you are in Chicago, check out the Chicago Honey-Coop. Since New York City and Los Angeles have Beekeeper Associations, they will be able to give you good advice or you might want to volunteer in order to get a good feel for what is required.
