Fans of The Lord of the Rings, unite! While we wait for more details about Amazon’s upcoming show based in Middle Earth, here is a list of real-life “hobbit houses” that would give Bilbo Baggins’s home a run for its money.
For some the trip to New Zealand, where the movies filmed, is too far or not affordable at the moment. Even if you go all the way there, it’s not possible to stay in one of the hobbit houses. So, what’s a Tolkien fan to do? Visit Orondo, Wash., and stay in a hobbit house, complete with a round front door. The inside is great as well and decorated to resemble a traditional hobbit home.
Another great place to stay is the hobbit house in San Francisco. This dwelling also has a round door — just like the films. The inside is made of granite rock walls, giving you an experience that really feels like The Lord of The Rings. This home fuels the imagination and has great reviews from those that stayed. There is no electricity, so you’ll also get the opportunity to go off the grid and just enjoy the home. There is WiFi at the owner’s home nearby, but, to truly live like a hobbit, ditching the electronics for a weekend might be a great idea.
Lastly, a great place to get the full “hobbit home treatment” is at a hotel in South Africa — the birthplace of J.R.R. Tolkien. Each room is named after a different character in the series. The hotel offers old-world charm, with plenty of copies of The Hobbit ready to be read by guests.
