Trends / Unique Itineraries & Tours

Central America’s largest country is home to incredible biodiversity, and there are hundreds of species of birds. Here are some of the best spots for keen birdwatchers to enjoy.

Top of the list is Los Guatuzos, a reserve on the south shore of Nicaragua home to aquatic birds like the Roseate Spoonbill. Elsewhere on the lake is Isla El Zapote, where you can spot herons, cormorants and more on the uninhabited island.

With more than 400 species of birds within its territory, the Indio Maiz Biological Reserve is a real gem. There are Great Green Macaws and Great Curassows here, as well as jaguars, manatees and pumas.

On the remote northeastern coast lies the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve. It’s the biggest protected reserve in Central America, but its isolation means infrastructure is minimal. Don’t expect to be pampered if you make the journey here.

A more accessible option is the Montibelli Private Wildlife Reserve, just 30 minutes from Managua. It’s nowhere near as wild as Bosawás, but there are 152 bird species here.

If you are in Leon, head to Isla Juan Venado on the coast. There are mangroves here you can kayak around, spotting pelicans, herons and sea turtles if you are lucky.
