Trends / Sports

Lake Placid is home to the Olympic Sports Complex and the go-to place for winter athletes to hone their skills. It’s also the perfect place for adventurous travelers to try their hand at bobsledding. Nestled alongside Bobsled Run Lane on the slope of Mt. Van Hoevenberg lies a 1,500-meter track open to the public nearly year-round.

The concrete track was built in 2000 and rests atop a refrigeration system that allows water to freeze almost upon touch. Workers spray enough water on it to create a layer of ice just less than two inches thick. For safety reasons, visitors are only allowed to race down half of the track, reaching speeds up to 55 mph. Any further and bobsledders can reach upward of 90 mph, making it dangerous for inexperienced guests. Visitors are also encouraged to try the luge and skeleton.

The regular season for bobsledding on ice at the OSC runs October–April. In the warmer months the attraction moves to a nearby location where the ride is on wheels. The cost for an adult is $95 while children ride for $85. Participants receive a commemorative team photo, bobsled lapel pin and team shirt — and one unforgettable, bumpy ride.

Check out the website for more information on the Bobsled Experience rules and regulations, as well as ways to book your trip.
