Following the January 2017 tragic shooting during the BPM Festival at Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, festival organizers issued a statement saying authorities in the city banned all festivals of its kind.
“For now, we will be postponing our plans for The BPM Festival in Brazil until further notice. Ur hearts are broken by the loss of six wonderful lives that were cruelly cut short. We will not forget them as we struggle to come to grips that such a tragedy could have occurred at an event that is the very embodiment of positivity and shared love of music in the global dance community.”
Mayor Cristina Torres Gómez held a press conference with the Business Coordinating council of Riviera Maya, announcing, “We want these types of events to go. We won’t allow one more,” confirming neither BPM nor March’s Arena Festival would return.
The festival also announced its event in Brazil would be postponed indefinitely, with various media outlets speculating the violence stemmed from a conflict between drug cartels and festival organizers. The Mexican cartel known as Los Zetas claimed responsibility for the shooting, allegedly attacking the club over territory and a refused payment by organizers.
Brazil’s event was supposed to be the festival’s 10th anniversary celebration, but its indefinite postponement means the festivities next take place at BPM Portugal in September.
