Budapest will soon celebrate the reopening of a unique wing of the Museum of Fine Arts that’s been closed to the public for 70 years. The entire museum has been closed, too, since 2015 for renovations.

The Museum of Fine Arts will reopen gradually starting in October, with the exception of a few preview visits this spring. The museum’s Romanesque Hall, with its array of frescoes, will reopen for the first time to the public since it was abandoned in 1945.

The museum’s massive, arched stone doors lead to massive murals spread across 2,500 square meters of surface area. The brilliant tones come in blues, reds, ocre and forest green, and they’re all accented with gold leaf. The hall has a diversity of paintings, including some inspired by Christian iconography and some from Hungarian history. They show castles, saints, kings, angels, dragons and Zodiac symbols.

The hall was built in the early 1900s, like the rest of the museum, but, during WWII, bombs shattered its windows and the hall was damaged. The area was closed until renovations started in December 2016.

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
