Yes, dog surfing is really a sport and it is amazing. Imagine legions of your favorite furry friends suited up and ready to swim, hanging ten on top of a surfboard to see who’s the baddest pooch of them all.
Well, it turns out you don’t have to imagine it at all. The World Dog Surfing Championships in Northern California is the place where all your dreams come true. Each year, hundreds of dog lovers line the shores of the Pacific coastline to compete in an epic showdown where the wind meets the wave.
Don’t worry: It’s perfectly safe for everyone involved. In fact, most of the competitors fully trained to ride a board and they’re each required to wear a puppy life vest for safety. The event features competitions for every size, from toy poodles to giant schnauzers that know how to surf with prizes going to the top dog in each category. Of course, the day features plenty of dog adoptions and charity events, too.
If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to see a dog surf, it’s definitely worth checking out. You can even sign your own pup up if you think he’s got what it takes to win the crown. Registration is only $30, but if your pooch isn’t cool with the water you can always enter him in the fashion contest instead.
