The Pearl of the South, Cienfuegos translates to 100 fires, although, the city receives its name from José Cienfuegos, Captain General of Cuba (1816–19). Experience another side of Cuba at these sites.
Castillo de Jagua
Constructed to protect the bay from pirates, the 18th-century Jagua Fortress offers spectacular views from the entrance of the Cienfuegos bay.
Historic 1950s homes, a sculpture park and the Palacio de Valle lie along Cienfuegos’ Punta Gorda Peninsula. Have a drink on the rooftop bar at the Palacio de Valle and appreciate the Moorish-inspired architecture and panoramic views. Walk back along the palm tree-lined malecon (sea wall).
El Nicho
The Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes offers a tranquil retreat. Hidden within its forest lies El Nicho waterfall and pools. Nearby, Martin Infierno Cave houses the world’s largest stalagmite.
Parque José Martí
All local streets in Cienfuegos meet in the center of the city at the Parque José Martí (or Plaza de Armas), named after the Cuban national hero José Martí. Many ornate Neoclassical historical buildings surround the park including the Teatro Tomás Terry, Antiguo Ayuntamiento, Catedral de la Purisima Concepción, Collegio de San Lorenzo, and the Palacio Ferrer. Definitely explore inside the buildings and make your way to the rooftop of the Palacio Ferrer.
Tomás Acea Cemetery
Integrating mausoleums and tombstones into its gardens, the Tomás Acea Cemetery resembles the Parthenon at Athens.
The only city in Cuba founded by the French, Cienfuegos features unique architecture and design. Be sure to relax on the rooftop of the Hotel La Union and, if you have time, drive to Santa Clara to visit the museum and resting place of Che Guevara.
