For a long time, São Paulo was a hotbed for Brazilian rock music. While traditional music is available, the city is most known for its eclectic taste in music, fueled by a steady influx of immigrants and expatriate communities from Europe, Asia and South America. Eventually the acid house craze of the 80s reached Brazil, creating a vibrant scene of DJs and producers who infused the music with their own Latin style. If you’re looking to dance in São Paulo, but aren’t interested in doing the samba, be sure to check out one of these amazing clubs.
Clash Club
This late-night spot has a young clientele and modern décor, mostly catering to the local techno scene. If you have a taste for hip-hop, be sure to stop by on Thursday.
Lions Nightclub
If you’re looking for an older crowd in posh surroundings, Lions Nightclub is located in downtown São Paulo, which is pretty much empty at night. The club is hidden away in an old office building, making it a luxurious escape with a great view of the city. Lions is particularly known for its VIP section and invite-only membership perks.
Hot Hot
Another downtown club, Hot Hot, is an intimate venue with bright colors, gaudy 70s décor and a dark dance floor. It’s located in an area called low-Augusta, named after the luxury shops that were converted into brothels as well as several after-hours clubs.
D-EDGE
This might be the most important venue for dance music in Brazil, in addition to being one of the best clubs in the world. Founded in 2003, D-EDGE has four rooms of futuristic décor and cutting-edge sound, holding up to 20,000 people under floor-to-ceiling LED lights. The prevailing rhythms are house and techno, but the club has a varied taste, offering funk and disco on Fridays, experimental music on Saturdays and even stays true to its roots with rock sessions on Monday.
