If you’re more in the mood for underground dance, be sure to check out these great clubs.
Wrongbar
For bass heads, this is the best place for trap, dubstep and drum & bass. The club is also known for booking an eclectic variety of bands if you’re into punk, funk or soul. There’s also a pinball machine and jukebox if you get bored.
The Drake Hotel
A number of areas around Toronto’s west end are gentrifying into trendy neighborhoods, best exemplified by The Drake Hotel, a former flophouse turned boutique hotel and club. This intimate, 200-person-capacity club is known for having a tasteful lineup of house and techno DJs.
NEST
Replacing Ryze, NEST is one of the newer clubs to serve Toronto’s growing club culture. It’s a favorite thanks to its impressive Dynacord sound system and 13,000 square feet of space.
Mod Club Theatre
Named after British mod culture of the 60s, Mod Club Theatre is the alternative choice on this list. It’s a highly adaptable venue, comfortable showcasing an indie rock band as well as rave DJs.
Coda
At the turn of the millennium, most venues shifted toward a Top 40 program. Footwork was one of two clubs (the other being Guvernment) that rejected this trend, incubating the city’s underground dance scene for nearly a decade. Today, its spiritual successor is Coda, a sprawling venue that aims to be North America’s premier house and techno club.
The Comfort Zone
If you like after-hours clubs, Toronto’s most famous is The Comfort Zone. In limbo for 10 months after a series of drug raids, the self-described “special events venue” reopened in 2009 with plenty of dancing until the sun comes up.
