Cuban art is increasingly popular these days, and here are some of the most interesting artists to keep your eye on.
First up is Carmen Herrera, a minimalist painter still working at the ripe old age of 101 years old from her base in New York. She is known for speaking out against sexism in the art world as well as her painting.
Next is Alexandre Arrechea, a multidisciplinary artist that lives in Miami. He used to be part of the Los Carpinteros art collective before striking out on his own.
Tania Bruguera is a fascinating installation and performance artist who isn’t afraid of touching on controversial topics such as immigration and political propaganda. She is well known for throwing her hat into the ring as a future president of Cuba.
Carlos Garaicoa is now based in the Spanish capital of Madrid, but his work reveals a lasting fascination with his homeland. He is best known for focusing on the decaying urban center of Havana.
Perhaps the most important living artist from Cuba is Manuel Mendive. An Afro-Cuban with a strong belief in the Santeria religion, he draws heavily on his background in painting, sculpture and performance art.
