As more and more people are either diagnosed with gluten intolerance or choose to eat a gluten-free diet for other health reasons, a wave of new gluten-free products is hitting grocery store shelves. It’s even affecting the beverage industry. For example, hard cider, which is naturally gluten-free, is having a moment, with sales and production surging.
But what about beer? If you’re a beer drinker who needs to or chooses to go gluten free, it can be tough to find an acceptable alternative. Most beer is brewed with wheat, which contains the gluten protein so many are trying to avoid.
Luckily, a few breweries are opening and making beer with other grains naturally gluten free. Among them are: Ghostfish Brewing in Seattle; Omission Beer in Oregon; New Planet Beer in Colorado; Groundbreaker Brewing also in Oregon; and even Coors, which has a gluten-free beer called Coors Peak. These breweries use ingredients like millet, sorghum, quinoa and even lentils and chestnuts to kick off the fermenting process and give the beer good flavor and body.
Several breweries also make one or two gluten-free beers; Bon Appetit recently released a list of best bets.
