When it comes to medieval, walled cities in Europe, Dubrovnik is one of the most visited and most adored by travelers from all over the world. Sitting on the edge of the Adriatic Sea, the Croatian city’s Old City is full of romantic restaurants, cobblestone corridors and thousands of years of history.

The Old City has become so popular with tourists, Dubrovnik tourism officials began guided tours and leisurely walks on top of the walls that surround the city. These picturesque walks provide visitors with views of the sea, the mountains and the outskirts of Dubrovnik, but terminate shortly after the summer sunset, around 7:30 p.m. Beginning in 2017, Dubrovnik’s mayor decided to extend the hours of these wall walks to allow tourists to view the surroundings by night, an option not possible in years past.

The main concern for these nighttime walks is safety and security. To provide a safer environment for visitors, the government plans to add security cameras throughout the walkways of the wall to capture the perimeter of the Old City and beyond. The Red Cross will also supply volunteers and staff members to monitor the wall at night and help out if any accidents were to occur.

With a projected date of inception in 2017, tourists to Croatia will soon experience a night walk for the centuries.
