Wineries might not be the first thing that come to mind when you think about Michigan, but California isn’t the only state with tons of excellent wineries to suit every palate. Some have even called Michigan the “Napa Valley of the Midwest.

If that sounds enticing, read on.

Traverse City Wineries

Traverse City is Michigan’s most well-known wine hot spot (and an immensely popular tourism hub). Situated in the northern Lower Peninsula of the state, the town first became known for its white wines, but it has also started to produce wonderful light, red wines. Since the area is renowned for its fantastic cherries, finding a refreshing cherry wine is a worthwhile mission.

You’ll find the wineries on both the Leelanau and Old Mission peninsulas, and there are even tour companies that provide excellent winery tours. Plus, you won’t have to worry about driving around.

Southwest Michigan Wineries

Traverse City might be the most popular destination for wine-lovers, but don’t overlook the southwestern portion of the state. Thanks to its close proximity to other major cities in Michigan (and Chicagoland), the southwest is the perfect place to do some winery touring.

Wineries dot the shoreline from the Indiana border all the way north to Saugatuck, and they’re close enough together to sample a few in a single day. Winemakers in this part of the state even say heir soil creates the perfect conditions for grapes to flourish.

Traverse City and the shores of Lake Michigan aren’t the only places to sample a fine wine in Michigan, though. If you need more inspiration, check out these Wine and Beer Trails on the Pure Michigan website.
