Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve in Guerneville, Calif., offers an alternative to winery visits in Sonoma County. The reserve sits on more than 800 acres of majestic surroundings.
The visitors’ center is at the base of the park. Stop in for trail maps and more information about the reserve. Depending on skill level, there are trail options for beginners (one mile) up through experts (nine miles). There is a group picnic area less than a mile into the reserve, with tables, grills and restroom access.
The tallest tree in the reserve is located right near the entrance. Parson Jones Tree measures more than 310 feet high — longer than the length of a football field. The oldest tree in the reserve, Colonel Armstrong Tree is estimated to be more than 1,400 years old.
The trees provide a good amount of shade, making for a cool, quiet and shady experience along the trails. There are few animals within the reserve, as the lack of light prevents many plants from growing, which would provide food and shelter for the animals.
The reserve is a quick drive from popular Sonoma County towns including Healdsburg and Santa Rosa. The hours are 8 a.m. until one hour after official sunset. Entrance costs $8 per vehicle. Pedestrian and bicyclists enter for free.
