Of all of the ecosystems on Earth, the jungle is known as the most hostile to human survival. The high humidity, rainfall and dangerous animal life mean jungles are tough places. However, that doesn’t stop people from trying to explore them.
Arguably the most dangerous jungle trek in the world involves crossing the Darien Gap between Panama and Colombia. Usually traversed by drug runners and migrants, this dense jungle is declared out of bounds to tourists. You’ll have to be lucky or wealthy if you want to find a way across.
Another extreme jungle trek is found in Guatemala. To reach the Mayan ruins at El Mirador, you’ll need to walk for two days through the jungle of the Mayan Biosphere.
Elsewhere in Latin America, the iconic Amazon basin is a popular spot for treks through the jungle. Popular jumping-off points include Iquitos in Peru and Manaus in Brazil.
Over in Asia, the island of Borneo is home to incredible jungles. Extreme Borneo offers jungle-trekking trips from Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of the island.
Vietnam also has some amazing jungle areas, especially in the north of the country. These areas are populated by minority groups such as the Black H’mong, Red Dao and Tay, each of which have a distinct culture.
