Social media allows us to take virtual trips with all of our friends and family who travel to places we could only dream of. Thanks to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, among others, it´s easy to snap and share our surroundings while neglecting to actually stop and savor our new environment.
A new wave of travel trends involves going off the grid. Instead of digitally bragging your way through your holiday, grid-less travel means cutting off all communication and connections, and really indulging in what is around you, thus encouraging a true getaway and mental break from screens and the digital world.
Going off the grid does not mean traveling to big cities like London and Rome to sightsee and mingle with other travelers while your smartphone sits in your hotel room. Rather, it involves setting off for remote locations void of distractions, eliminating any desire to post a status or check your email.
Some locations and tourism operators have been specializing in this trend for years by offering unique experiences in which travelers can really disconnect. Build a raft in Africa and float down a desolate river, or spend a few days on an island in the Gulf of Thailand where there is absolutely no Internet access whatsoever. By completely removing yourself from your digital world, it is possible to rediscover the meaning of travel.
