Pigeon racing might not be a global sport, but it has its devotees in Greece, where the AS Golden Pigeon Race takes place.
The season takes place over the course of July, with the final today, July 29. The birds race over courses ranging from 120–420 kilometers in length, starting in Perea, Thessaloniki.
The AS loft is run by the Aslanidis family, and is known as one of the best in Greece. Pigeon fanciers from across Europe come to see the facility and compete in the championships.
Pigeon fancying is a niche sport, but one that inspires great passion among its fans. Former heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson is a famous pigeon fan, but it is not known whether he has visited the AS Golden Pigeon race in Greece.
The city of Thessaloniki is the second biggest in the country, with a thriving youth culture and lots of history. It’s worth tacking on a trip if you are in Greece, although many visitors get stuck in Athens or the islands.
At 520 kilometers north of Athens, it’s a fair distance from the standard tourist trail, but with some planning you can stop off at some islands on the way to the big event.

United Continues Its Global Expansion
