Bhutan is a striking Buddhist Kingdom on the Himalayas’ eastern edge in South Asia, known for its ancient monasteries, fortresses and dramatic natural landscapes ranging from subtropical plains to steep mountains and glacial valleys.
The High Himalayas offer ideal hiking and trekking opportunities, with peaks as high as 7,326 meters. Hikers and trekkers can explore remote villages, gold-roofed temples and discover wildlife unique to the area on several different trails throughout the region. The Department of Tourism of Bhutan has 11 trekking routes, ranging from 3 to 23 days in length, and there are also opportunities for day hikes around the cultural centers of Thimpu and Paro.
Discover the iconic Dzong architecture of the Paro Valley, such as the Temple of the Divine Madman and the Khamsung Yuley Namgyel Temple. Enjoy breathtaking scenery on the Gangtey Nature Trail through the Phobjikha Valley. Stumble across the Land of the Thunder Dragon and the Burning Lake in Bumthang, Bhutan’s most sacred valley. Explore high mountain passes, alpine forests and lush farmlands on the Pasaling Gompa hike and Kurja to Tamshing hike.
Windows are relatively small for good weather in Bhutan, with prime hiking times in October for three to four weeks and April for three weeks. Most treks are not difficult, but high altitudes and remoteness make them ideal for more experienced hikers.
